what is crumple me?
Crumple.me allows you to take a realllly long URL and compress it, for example:
http://www.knightsoftheroundtable.com/annualbudget/armor_and_mail/XC~sword-attachments_048198.tar.gz
can become:
http://crumple.me/swords (which is a whole lot easier to remember)
http://(www.)Crumple.Me is a little different than other URL-compressing services, here are the main features:
- As you might expect, you can turn a REALLY LONG URL into a short one, for example crumple.me/abc123
- As you might NOT expect, you can name your own crumple word (like budgetreport, mydogskip, delvalle, etc.) if it's not taken already
- Beyond that, you can create an account, which allows you to do the following things
- Completely control your URL's, so that you can have:
crumple.me/ibm/currentbudget
crumple.me/ibm/3Q2009cashflow
crumple.me/ibm/companywhitepaper
crumple.me/ibm/personnel/JoshHiggins
crumple.me/ibm/personnel/SamJackson
crumple.me/ibm/personnel/accounting/JoeBeanCounter
.. - Show your urls on an index page, so that crumple.me/ibm shows all (or some) of your key URL's as a directory. You can sort by category and show/hide some URL's. This can become a great sitemap.
- Or you can simply set crumple.me/ibm to go to your company
- Register your website's sitemap, such as crumple.me/ibm/sitemap
- Place the crumple me icon on your site to link to a printable list of pages and descriptions on your site. (There's a way to exclude certain pages, we'll explain that in the help section.)
- Completely control your URL's, so that you can have:
- THE CRUMPLEME API!
As a programmer I write routines which generate emails linking back to a site to login, check on something, update your membership, etc. Those URL's can be extremely long and don't look that professional. So, we'll be writing an API which will accept a GET OR POST header, and return the resulting crumple.me URL. With this you can get crumple me URL's remotely, on the fly, in a few milliseconds. The API will even allow you to batch URL's. Other features will include:- option for a complex path (must start with your account)
e.g. http://crumple.me/ibm/signups/application-82948 - option for a one-or-two token return. This prevents redirect to the wrong resource due to a typo or hacking
e.g. one-token: http://crumple.me/ibm/ap82948
two-token: http://crumple.me/ibm/ap82948,66103 (2nd parameter prevents receiving incorrect resource)
- option for a complex path (must start with your account)
- The API will also provide a way to check back on which URL's have been "hit" and how many times
NOTE:
We monitor closely for link farms, and you can ONLY link to a single domain for an account
crumple me is a community and links to objectionable URL's can be reported by the community. This may result in your IP address being blocked for anonymous posts or you account being suspended. And, we will list your account on a blacklist depending on the offense. So in short, if your purpose is not for the benefit of others and the good of the internet community, don't use crumple.me
As we grow, I can see people using crumple.me as a social bookmarking site, voting on a name for a well-known page. You might want to register your site in the future so that we know how to get in contact with you (we do not sell your email), and as we develop more site-indexing services.
